AGUA DULCE, CA –Today, George Whitesides, candidate to represent California’s 27th Congressional District, is urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to begin the assessment process to add the Chiquita Canyon Landfill to the EPA’s Superfund National Priority List:
“For far too long, families in Val Verde, Castaic and parts of Santa Clarita have been forced to endure the hazardous and dangerous conditions from the Chiquita Canyon Landfill.
“Even as our community suffers, our Congressman Mike Garcia has failed to deliver any meaningful results and voted to cut $564 million in funding for the EPA, the very agency responsible for overseeing cleanup efforts, regulating air quality and protecting public health. Our community deserves better. The fact is that this is a public health and environmental crisis that needs urgent results—not empty promises.
“Today, I’m urging the EPA to conduct an assessment of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill to determine whether it qualifies for the federal Superfund National Priorities List.
“If approved, our community will work side by side with the EPA to ensure thorough cleanup and establish long-term protections for our community’s health and safety. Together, we will demand accountability, secure federal assistance and make our community a safer place for all of us to live, work and raise our families.”
